Our Stories is not accepting applications at the moment for new staff members. However, you are welcome to submit a resume and cover letter and we will keep it on file.
If you think you have what it takes to be an Our Stories Fiction Reader,
Before Applying, please consider the following questions:
- Do you know how to look at a story and find the work’s potential?
- Are you interested in helping writers develop their abilities? Can you find the artist’s intention (and respect it)? Do you understand the difference between constructive criticism and an opinionated, judgmental review?
- Can you mark the exact sentence where you lost interest in a story? Can you explain why the story stopped working for you? Can you offer suggestions as to how to better the piece?
- Have you worked on a literary journal? Or have you spent some time in an MFA program studying fiction and critical analysis while reviewing countless stories and hashing out your feedback in front of the class?
- Do you believe you have the developed skills as a reader, writer and reviewer needed to teach fiction writing even if you’ve never (and might not ever) get that call to join the ranks of MFA professors across the country (because, damn it! you know what the hell a good story is!)?
- Do you mind working several hours from home, reading, reviewing, and contributing regularly to the Our Stories conversation while earning money to do (what we hope) you would be doing anyway (somewhere else for free)?
If you answered yes to more than one of these questions, then we think you've got the right stuff for Our Stories.
- A short bio about who you are, what you’re up to, and what you are currently working on.
- Tell us what you know about Our Stories, how you found us, and what you understand about our submission process.
- Given your answers to the above questions, let us know why you would be a good candidate for the position.
- Tell us a little bit about your own work, if you've published, and where.
Every potential member of our staff takes a two-part examination where we assess your ability to review stories.
- Staff members read and review up to 15 stories per quarter, and fulfill other editing duties as assigned.
- Staff members are paid for their work during contest submission periods, and for managing and conducting online workshops.
If you're interested . . .
email editor@ourstories.us with your resume and a letter of interest.
